~ Point Wolfe to Big Salmon River ~

If you are a hiker from the maritimes or looking for hikes in the maritimes, chances are that you’re familiar with the Fundy Footpath along the Bay of Fundy. There are many hikes along the Fundy Parkway short and long with world class campsites available to all hikers enjoying the trails.

The Fundy Footpath is a challenging, approximately 63km thru hike which can be hiked in either direction starting from Point Wolfe or Big Salmon River.

The trail has ten large, steep hills which climb and descend from 0m elevation up to the highest point being 230m elevation. Total elevation gain/descent is 3158m which is equivalent to hiking the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim over 63km instead of 82km which is quite wild if you think about it!

There is only one tidal crossing Located at Goose Creek. Passable at high tide, but not recommended. At high tide you will see water anywhere from waist to chest deep. Two hours before or after high tide is recommended and low tide you will only see water at about ankle deep. The crossing will be quite muddy and water shoes or barefoot is ideal when crossing.

Camping along the FFP has never proven difficult, but will be busiest around the first week of the season and Canada Day weekend. There are countless world class areas along the trail to set up a tent or hammock. Nearly every cove has a camping area and firepit. My personal favoutite campsites are Little Salmon River and Seely Beach, although they’re all relatively great.

The terrain throughout this hike is mainly a soft carpet of pine needles and mossy areas with plenty of tree roots to navigate. Most of the coves are rock beaches which are easy to navigate and offer the perfect place to enjoy a break. The trail is also very well marked with white blazes which make it hard to find yourself off trail. I do recommend getting the trail guidebook though which can be purchased at the hikingnb web page.

I cannot recommend this trail enough as it is one of New Brunswick’s true gems and holds a place dear to me as it was my first thru hike and it is a trail that I hike annually. It really is one of my favourite trails that the province has to offer!

I hope that this video serves as a trail guide and provides motivation for others to get out and explore the beautiful Fundy Footpath or any hikes in our beautiful Maritimes!
