I remember as a sonography student how NERVOUS I was to scan a real patient… someone who was not my classmate. I had the overwhelming FEAR of what if I miss something? How do I know if I’m even doing this right? Will I know what button to push? The anxieties crept in and I won’t lie.. even making sure I chose the right probe for the right exam was difficult some of the times.

I’m here to tell you that those feelings you’re having are normal. We all go through them. We all have to start somewhere. You don’t become an expert over night. Keep in mind that you are just starting. At least you’re tackling your fears. At least you are picking up the probe. At least you have someone by your side to ask for help. Remember that you made it this far for a reason!

Scanning in clinical for your first time WILL be hard & scary. But you will learn so much and build confidence overtime. Lean on your mentors, teachers, classmates, and coworkers. Let me be the first one to let you know it might get easier after a few years but you will continually get difficult patients your ENTIRE career. So the more you scan, the more you learn. I’m still learning everyday and will have nervous breakdowns sometimes… and it’s okay. We are human Sonographers with feelings that need to make decisions on the daily, not robot Sonographers without a mind or soul. And that’s what makes the career beautiful! We are able to communicate, to have empathy for our patients and ourselves, and to feel like we’re struggling but also learn from the struggles. Every day is different and every scan will teach us something new as a student. This is how we learn and become better.
