Rick Preuss, owner of Preuss Pets, worked with Small Business Development Center (SBDC) consultants Tom McCallion and Laurie Lonsdorf. He describes what it's like to manage and grow a 32-year-old small business.


For us, one of the things, people come in and they see these animals, and people assume they can take them home, put them in an aquariaum or take an animal from the bird room and develop a relationship immediately. Well it's not as simple as that. You need actually convey that you that to the consumer.

One of the things about having this particular business, especially as large, we have over 60 employees, is it can be rather chaotic, and you're almost at certain times just putting out fires. And the biggest problem with that is yeah, it's great and we've been able to function for many years we are on 32nd year now. The problem is that we really need to now in today's marketplace, stop and look at it also from a business perspective. And that's where the Small Business Development Center has really been helpful at really getting us to stop, think, reorganize and organize, so that those questions can be answered.
