Welcome to Korat or Nakhon Ratchasima. With vast forest areas, Korat is known as the province with amazing nature including UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Let’s get some fresh air and indulge ourselves with the pureness of mother nature together.

I am delighted to show you the amazing nature of Khao Yai National Park. We are entering at the main entrance which is the north side of the park, located in Pak Chong district.

Establised in 1962 as Thailand’s first national park, it was declared UNESCO’s World Heritage Site in 2005. The park covers an area of over 2,000 km2, covering 4 Thai provinces - Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachinburi, Saraburi, and Nakhon Nayok.

We start our tour by paying respect to Chao Por Khao Yai. Chao Por Khao Yai or ‘Palad Jang’ was a soldier and nature conservationist who helped protect the nature around this national park area almost 100 years ago.

I would recommend you to stop at the Visitor Centre which is 14 kms from the main entrance because you will find useful information. There are exhibitions inside giving you some ideas of how Khao Yai National Park has been developed.

Outside, it is also one of the best locations in the park to spot some common birds. Kingfishers and hornbills are frequently seen.

Khao Yai is a part of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex; a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO, covering 5 protected areas from Khao Yai to Cambodian border. The other protected areas are; Pang Sida National Park, Thap Lan National Park, Ta Phraya National Park and Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary.

Khao Yai has existed for over 140 million years and used to have many species of dinosaurs. The fossils or footprints have been found in this area.

As there is a large diversity of plants and wildlife, including endangered species, Khao Yai is an important research site that benefits to not only Thailand, but also the world as a whole.

Khao Yai has many waterfalls, most of them easily accessible by car combined with a short trail. Some needs longer hiking with guide assistance. But let me show you the must-visit one – Haew Narok Waterfall or Hell Abyss Waterfall. The waterfall is accessible by a 600-meter long trail from a car park next to the main road.

This three tiered waterfall has total altitude of 150 meters and is the biggest waterfall in park. The water drops down to lower part very heavily and the sound resounds throughout the forest.

Another must-visit spot is Haew Suwat Waterfall. Many film scenes have been taken at this waterfall. The jump scene of Leonardo DiCaprio from the movie “The Beach” is the most famous one.

The waterfall is only a hundred meter off from its carpark area. There is a restaurant next to the carpark which is regularly open.

There are two campgrounds within the park, both with toilets, showers, and parking spaces. Tents and accessories such as sleeping bags, pillows, blankets are available for rent. The areas around both campgrounds are ideal for hiking. During winter time in Thailand, from November to February, the night temperatures may fall down to 9-10 °C, so warm clothes are recommended.

Less than an hour drive from the main gate of Khao Yai National Park, we have arrived a Korat Geopark named Khao Yai Thiang, located in Si Khiw district. Up on a mountain lies a reservoir with biking route around. Such a great recreational place for the public. Bikes are available for rent at an affordable price. The air is so fresh here.

Besides, this location is a place where the clean energy is produced. Taken care by Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, giant windmills are used to produce electrical power. We can also get good photo shots from the windmills as well as the panoramic view over Lam Takong Dam and the highway on the lower level.

Khao Yai area is full of great recreational places and accommodations. There is a large variety of hotels and resorts which allows you to stay closer to nature. This is one of the areas in Thailand with purest air. Therefore, staying overnight here is highly recommended.

For wine lovers, you can explore vineyards and wineries as well as enjoy good food and drinks.

Last but not least, I would like to show you the local food scene at the most famous night market in Korat, Save One Nigh Market.

Hope you enjoyed the amazing nature in the city of World Heritage. Click the links below the video to discover more. Wish you a great trip to Korat MICE City!
