Films on Artmaking in Southeast Asia: Ceramics

Cultural Medallion recipient Iskandar Jalil meditates on the art of pottery in this demonstration. He takes the viewer through the many steps involved in making a vessel—kneading the clay, wheel throwing, drying, firing in the kiln, glazing the biscuit—while offering personal insights on this discipline. For Iskandar Jalil, the process uncovers the self: “every pot done on the wheel will reveal the potter.”

About the Artist
Iskandar Jalil (b. 1940, Singapore) is one of Singapore’s foremost ceramic artists and widely regarded as a master potter. He apprenticed and trained in Japan on the prestigious Colombo Plan scholarship in the 1970s, and is widely recognised for expanding, advancing and reinventing the practice of studio pottery and ceramic art. He was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Visual Art in 1988 and conferred the Order of the Rising Sun (Gold Rays with Rosette) by the Emperor of Japan in 2015.
