Hiking to Seealpsee 🇨🇭

Welcome back to our channel. Today we are at the beautiful Alpstein region of Switzerland and we’re hiking to Seealpsee, a stunning alpine lake nestled in the heart of Appenzell. We’re starting our journey from Wasserauen, a popular base for many hikes in the area. This is one of our favourite hike and very close to our heart.

As you can see Lake Seealpsee from the parking lot takes around 1 hour and 10 mins. Let’s see how much it takes for us to reach the lake.

The trail is well-marked and begins with a gradual incline. Along the way, you’re greeted by lush green meadows, traditional Swiss chalets, and the occasional sound of cowbells in the distance—truly a postcard-perfect Swiss experience!

There’s a short steep section as we climb closer to the lake, but don’t worry—it’s manageable, and the views make every step worthwhile. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, especially if it’s rained recently.

And there it is the breathtaking Seealpsee! The emerald-green waters and the towering peaks around it create a scene straight out of a fairy tale. It took us approximately around 1 hr and 30 minutes to reach the lake at a steady pace and along with some breaks in between.

If you didn’t pack snacks, don’t worry—there are cozy restaurants nearby where you can try some local Appenzeller specialties.

We took a stroll around the lake as well to witness the beauty from every angle.

We’re heading up to a spot just a little above the lake to enjoy the stunning views and have our lunch. It’s not very high, but it offers the perfect vantage point to take in the beauty of Seealpsee.We’ve brought along some sandwiches to enjoy here while soaking in the peaceful surroundings of the lake. Simple food tastes so much better when paired with a view like this! Sometimes, it’s the little things—good company, a simple meal, and nature’s beauty—that make these moments unforgettable.

So as I mentioned earlier, this hike is very close to our heart. The reason being this was our very first hike after moving to Switzerland. Back then, our son was just two years old, and we attempted this trail with a stroller—something we quickly realized wasn’t the best idea! We didn’t expect the hike to be so challenging, and it turned into quite an adventure. But it’s memories like these that make hikes special, don’t they? It’s that day and this day—we’ve learned to do our homework very well before heading out! Now, hiking has become such a big part of our life here, and every trail brings back fond memories of how it all started.

Here’s a quick overview of the trail we’re taking today. It’s about 2.7 kilometers one way with an elevation gain of around 270 meters. Optionally you can hike around the lake which will add another 1.5 km. The route is well-marked and suitable for all skill levels, making it a great option for families and beginners. The trail starts at Wasserauen and winds through beautiful meadows and forests before reaching the breathtaking Seealpsee.
