She began opening boxes with the systematic desperation of someone hoping to find value but expecting junk. The first contained tablecloths, yellowed with age, smelling of mothballs. Lily explored with a child's curiosity, pulling items from boxes and creating her own organizational system that made sense only to her. She found a jewelry box on a shelf and brought it to her mother with both hands, treating it like something precious.
"Look how pretty!"
The box was wooden, about the size of a shoebox, with an inlaid floral design on the lid. Mother of pearl caught the fluorescent light, creating small rainbows. The craftsmanship was beautiful, intricate, suggesting quality from an era when objects were made to last rather than replaced.
Jennifer took it, expecting weight, but finding it surprisingly light. The hinges creaked when she opened it.
Inside lay the kind of jewelry her grandmother had worn. Costume pieces, mostly. A string of fake pearls with a broken clasp. Clip-on earrings set with glass stones that pretended to be rubies.
