International Youth Orchestra Bridges (IYOB)

A British and South African youth orchestra collaboration expands horizons in music and beyond.

Young British musicians joined young South African musicians to perform orchestral concerts in Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

The International Youth Orchestra Bridges project is an exciting collaboration between the West Coast Youth Orchestra (South Africa), the Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra (South Africa) and the Waverley Ensemble (UK).

It brings together young musicians from the UK, US and Australia and South Africa, aged between 13 and 18, to form an international orchestra.

The musicians have been rehearsing in their own countries and online. They came together for the first time in South Africa in July and August 2024, and performed at venues in Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

The project was created to build links between young musicians in different countries, give them experience of the life of a professional musician and encourage them to pursue music as a career.

The project is open to musicians from all backgrounds, thanks to charitable donations that ensure that no one is left behind.
