Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran was born into a Malayali family in Nawalapitiya, Kandy District, British Ceylon (Srilanka) to Melakkath Gopalan Menon and Maruthur Satyabhama from Palakkad, in the modern-day Indian state of Kerala. His father was a Nair and his mother was from Vadavannur. MGR also claimed to be of Tamil Kongu Vellalar heritage, with ancestors who had landed in Kerala centuries before.Gopalan Menon died when Ramachandran was two and a half years old. His sister passed away due to illness shortly after his father died. Ramachandran and his brother had to be raised by their mother on her own. She decided to return to India and traveled back to Kerala, where she was unable to secure the support of her relatives.
Ramachandran began his acting career at school, when he joined the Boys Company play group and actively participated in the troupe's rigorous training programmes in singing, dancing, sword fighting, diction, and memorization. The struggles he endured in his early life and childhood shaped his character and political career. After a brief acting trip abroad with Madras Kandasamy Mudaliar, he returned to India, rejoined the Boys Company, and began playing main roles for the first time.Ramachandran was a fervent Hindu in his early years, worshipping Lord Sri Murugan and his mother's favorite divinity, Lord Sri Guruvayurappan.After joining the DMK, he developed a rationalist viewpoint.
