Before there was Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney’s first major cartoon star was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. In Trolley Troubles, Oswald takes the wheel of a rickety trolley car and barrels down the tracks with his passengers, navigating steep hills, collapsing bridges, and unpredictable livestock along the way. What should be a routine commute turns into a manic obstacle course of slapstick gags and inventive 1920s animation tricks.

Released on September 5, 1927, Trolley Troubles was one of the earliest Oswald shorts produced by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures. Oswald was a breakthrough character — more expressive and personality‑driven than Disney’s earlier creations — but the partnership ended abruptly in 1928 when Universal wrested ownership of the character away. This loss directly led Disney and Iwerks to create Mickey Mouse, making Trolley Troubles an important “Walt Before Mickey” chapter in animation history.
