This patient from years and years ago had an impromptu amputation in the Emergency Room.
In many cases of "DRY" gangrene, the bone is exposed, and that might require surgery to prevent worsening of the gangrene and infection. Here, the wound had fully covered any bone that would have been exposed.
Autoamputation is the spontaneous detachment of an appendage or organ of the body. In this case, the cause is likely PVD (peripheral vascular disease) that was left untreated.
