Today I’m making a sun-bonnet. Not because I don’t already have a sun-bonnet but because I have a “thing” for the very long curtained sunbonnets of the 1860s. And my other slat bonnet doesn’t sooth that itch, even if its from the same pattern. This is technically a stash busting project as the fabric is leftover from other projects. This bonnet took about a yard to make a bonnet this long, however, my fabric, which we today would call a windowpane cotton but in the period was referred to as “cross barred muslin” was nearly 60” wide. Although I used to hate “slat” sun-bonnets, I have come to really love them so I knew I was not going to cord this one. I also had a friend’s original 1860s sunbonnet in this same design so I did make a few extra design choices to more closely align with the original I got to examine (mostly, I just added an extra ruffle).
And yes, I do purposefully call it a “sun-bonnet” instead of sunbonnet because that’s how it was typically written in the mid 19th century. The more you know!
