“In cities like Yokohama, they collect 98% of property taxes and it reflects in their infrastructure. Everything is managed locally an
d efficiently. Here in Karachi, only 12% of property owners pay property tax, the remaining 88% are not paying property tax and it hurts the whole system,” says Murtaza Ali Agha, Project Manager of the Urban Immovable Property Tax (UIPT) initiative under the CLICK project, during his exclusive radio interview on FM91’s Mid Day Mix with Sarah Memon.

As he dove deeper into the Karachi Property Survey, Murtaza explained how this initiative funded by the World Bank and led by the Government of Sindh’s Local Government Department is reshaping Karachi’s future. A digitized and centralized online system is being developed, and tax responsibilities shifted to local councils, the survey aims to create a fair, transparent, and efficient property tax system that works for everyone.

He emphasized how increased citizen participation means better municipal services from improved roads and lighting to proper waste management and how this simple step of opening your door to survey teams can directly impact the future of your town.
