UNGA President Condemns ‘Catastrophic, Shameful’ Conditions In Gaza | Dawn News English

General Assembly President Francis emphasized the overarching duty of the UN and the Security Council, since the organization's inception in 1945, to prevent war's devastating impact on future generations. Urging immediate action to end the Gaza crisis, he condemned the catastrophic, unconscionable, and shameful situation, expressing shock over reported killings and injuries during aid distribution west of Gaza City.

With a rising death toll, infants succumbing to starvation, and 85 percent of Gaza's population (1.9 million people) internally displaced, he underscored the urgent need to address the dire circumstances. Expressing extreme concern about potential Israeli ground operations in Rafah, where nearly 1.5 million people reside, he called for maximum restraint to safeguard innocent civilian lives.

Highlighting Israeli restrictions on humanitarian access causing a significant reduction in lifesaving aid flow, with UNRWA reporting a 50 percent drop in daily trucks entering Gaza from January to February, he stressed the imperative to rapidly and substantially increase humanitarian operations and ensure unrestricted access to all civilians in need.
