A recent windstorm in Washington State caused a Douglas fir branch to fall on our 15-foot Schefflera delavayi specimen in Upper Woodland Garden at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden. Tune in as Nursery Manager and Assistant Curator Atsuko and Emily, assistant nursery manager, root a broken branch of this rare plant.

First, they removed the leaf surface by cutting off excess leaves on the lower part of the stem. Then, they cut the leaflets in half to reduce transpiration. They then made a fresh cut at the bottom of the stem and created a wound on the stem's side to expose the cambium layer.

Next, they applied Hormex #8 rooting hormone on the cut surface. The cuttings were stuck in a cutting mix (2.5:1=Perlite: Coco coir). Finally, the cuttings were placed on a heated bench, and the entire cutting was then covered in a clear plastic bag to keep the humidity high. Atsuko and Emily will continue to monitor the moisture level of the cutting mix.
