Air quality in Delhi-NCR plunged into the ‘severe’ category, prompting authorities to impose Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4) on Saturday.

According to the Centre’s pollution watchdog CAQM (Centre for Air Quality Management), pollution levels surged sharply due to highly unfavourable weather conditions and poor dispersal of pollutants, trapping toxic air over the region.

Experts say the pollution crisis is not only driven by vehicle emissions but also by large-scale burning of biomass and waste, including plastics. They warned that smoke from firewood and waste burning adds heavily to particulate pollution, while plastic burning releases toxic chemicals, posing a serious health risk.

With GRAP-4 restrictions in place, construction and industrial activities have been curtailed, traffic movement has been restricted, and the entry of non-Delhi-registered non-essential diesel commercial vehicles into the national capital has been banned.
