What is Bell's palsy?

Bell's palsy is a neurological disorder that results in sudden onset weakness of one side of the face and is caused by a neurological damage to the seventh cranial nerve. The facial nerve is responsible for controlling most of the muscles on one side of the face, so when there is a problem with it, it can have devastating effects on facial mobility.

What are the symptoms of Bell's palsy?

Bell's Palsy is a sudden paralysis of one side of the face that can last from days to years. Symptoms typically include: drooping eyelids, inability to close the eye, dry eyes and mouth, burn-like pain along the nerve on the face, and limited movement. It's not contagious and there's no way to know who will get it or why.

How is Bell's palsy diagnosed?

There are two common ways to diagnose Bell's palsy: through a physical examination and through a neurological evaluation. The neurological evaluation is more comprehensive and includes electromyography, nerve conduction tests, and facial nerve function assessments. If the diagnosis is unclear, the doctor may order a computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scan that can provide more information about the location and extent of any damage to the facial nerve.

What treatments are available for Bell's palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a disorder of the cranial nerve that supplies the muscles which control blinking and closing the eye. When this nerve becomes inflamed, it can cause paralysis and weakness to these muscles. There are several treatment options available, including steroid injections and medications to reduce inflammation or stop any increased blood flow. Other treatments may include physical therapy to re-educate weakened muscles. Surgery is sometimes needed if other treatments fail to work.
