The first decade after independence defined the Indian Armed Forces. Between 1947 and 1957, India witnessed both triumphs and trials — from the painful Partition and division of the military to the heroic defence of Jammu & Kashmir during the First Indo-Pak War. The bravery of soldiers like Major Somnath Sharma, India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee, symbolised the spirit of a young nation’s military. This period also saw the Indianisation of command, with General K.M. Cariappa becoming the first Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1949. Diplomatically, India signed the Panchsheel Agreement with China in 1954, laying the foundation of “Hindi-Chini Bhai-Bhai,” even as Tibet lost its independence. This episode of Defence Decades revisits 1947–1957, a decade that tested India’s resolve, shaped its armed forces, and set the stage for future battles — both on the ground and at the diplomatic table.
