But Leon Schwarzbaum survived. He survived the death camps of Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Sachsenhausen. He survived forced labour and two death marches. He lost his entire family in the Holocaust – but now he celebrates his 100th birthday.

A major BILD documentary honours Leon Schwarzbaum as one of the last remaining survivors of the million-fold murder of Europe’s Jews. The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier (65) received Schwarzbaum in Bellevue Palace on the occasion of his birthday. The President thanked him for his “incredible service to our country”, because he “passes on hope to the later-born” that never again will “that happen which can happen”.

In the moving BILD documentary by chief reporter Hans-Jörg Vehlewald, Schwarzbaum (born in Hamburg on 20 February 1921) recounts the Germans’ invasion of his home town of Będzin near Katowice in Upper Silesia. He talks about the ghetto, the horror of Auschwitz, and how he escaped the gas chambers. He talks about his time as a forced labourer at Siemens, his liberation by US soldiers, and why – for decades – he was not able to talk about the mass murder of his family and his people.

Schwarzbaum: “Sometimes, I’m ashamed that I have survived, and the others haven’t. I owe it to my friends who died miserably in the camp to give an account of my experiences. I do this for my parents who were murdered. I do this for my people.”
