James Saunders – the range of outside factors influencing it, as well as its own radius of action (2012)
Performed by Loren Chasse, Matt Hannafin, and Branic Howard on the morning of Sunday, July 7, 2019, for Extradition Special Recordings.
“the range of outside factors influencing it, as well as its own radius of action” was written for The New Silence, a trio featuring violinist Johnny Chang, bassist Koen Nutter, and percussionist Morten J. Olsen. Its title is drawn from Hans Haacke’s “Untitled Statement” (1969):
“A ‘sculpture’ that physically reacts to its environment and/or affects its surroundings is no longer to be regarded as an object. The range of outside factors influencing it, as well as its own radius of action, reach beyond the space it materially occupies. It thus merges with the environment in a relationship that is better understood as a ‘system’ of interdependent processes. These processes—transfers of energy, matter or information—evolve without the viewer’s empathy. In works conceived for audience participation the viewer might be the source of energy, or his mere presence might be required. There are also ‘sculpture’ systems which function when there is no viewer at all. In neither case, however, has the viewer’s emotional, perceptual or intellectual response any influence on the system’s behaviour. Such independence does not permit him to assume his traditional role of being the master of the sculpture’s programme (meaning), rather the viewer now becomes a witness. A system is not imagined; it is real.”
The basis of the piece is a source recording of a space, which is played back into a different space. Performers select sustaining sounds from both the source recording and the live performance environment, and replicate them instrumentally such that their additions overlap with the sounds being replicated. All performances of the piece are recorded, so that each recording becomes the source for the next realization. This most recent performance thus contains a complete history of the piece, encompassing (in chronological order) an original source recording made at the Waitrose Cafe, Portishead, UK, on November 27, 2012; The New Silence’s performance at O Tannenbaum, Berlin, on March 27, 2013; and a recording made on the banks of the River Exe, near Fortescue Farm, Devon, UK, on July 16, 2014.
