Patrick Swayze was an American actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter who rose to fame with his roles in Dirty Dancing (1987) and Ghost (1990). He was also known for his good looks and was named the “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine in 1991.
Swayze was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, Texas, to Patsy Swayze, a dancer and choreographer, and Jesse Wayne Swayze, an engineering draftsman. He had four siblings, including actor Don Swayze. He began dancing at his mother’s school at a young age and also excelled in sports and martial arts. Swayze made his film debut in Skatetown, U.S.A. (1979) and his Broadway debut in Grease (1979). He gained recognition for his role as Orry Main in the TV miniseries North and South (1985-1986). His breakthrough came with Dirty Dancing (1987), a romantic drama set in the 1960s, where he played Johnny Castle, a charismatic dance instructor who falls in love with a young woman named Baby, played by Jennifer Grey. The film was a huge hit and spawned the popular song “She’s Like the Wind”, which Swayze co-wrote and performed.
Swayze followed up with another blockbuster, Ghost (1990), a supernatural thriller where he played Sam Wheat, a banker who is murdered and tries to communicate with his girlfriend Molly, played by Demi Moore, through a psychic, played by Whoopi Goldberg. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two, including Best Supporting Actress for Goldberg. Swayze also received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
Swayze continued to work in various genres, such as action (Point Break, 1991), comedy (To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, 1995), drama (City of Joy, 1992), and adventure (King Solomon’s Mines, 2004). He also returned to the stage in Chicago (2003-2004) as Billy Flynn. He also starred in the TV series The Beast (2009) as an FBI agent.
In January 2008, Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He fought the disease bravely and continued to work until his death on September 14, 2009. He was 57 years old. He was survived by his wife Lisa Niemi, whom he married in 1975 and who was his partner in life and dance.
