What is Stress?
Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure or perceived threat. When you feel under emotional, mental, or physical strain, your body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol—triggering the “fight or flight” response. This can be helpful in short bursts, such as helping you meet a deadline. But when stress becomes chronic, it can negatively affect your health, mood, and daily functioning.

Stress isn’t always caused by dramatic events. Everyday pressures—like work demands, money worries, caring responsibilities, or health concerns—can build up over time.

What Are the Symptoms of Stress?

Stress can affect your body, thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Common symptoms include:

Physical: Headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, chest pain, stomach problems, trouble sleeping.
Emotional: Irritability, anxiety, low mood, feeling overwhelmed or out of control.
Cognitive: Difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts, forgetfulness.
Behavioral: Withdrawing from others, eating more or less than usual, using alcohol or drugs to cope, snapping at people.
Symptoms vary from person to person, and long-term stress can contribute to serious conditions like high blood pressure, depression, or burnout.
