Red Skelton (born Richard Bernard Skelton, July 18, 1913 – September 17, 1997) was an American comedian, actor, writer, and artist best known for his decades-long career in radio and television. He rose to national fame in the 1930s and 1940s with his radio show, which featured beloved characters like Clem Kadiddlehopper and Junior the Mean Widdle Kid.

From 1951 to 1971, Skelton starred in “The Red Skelton Show” on television, a variety program that became one of the most popular and enduring comedy shows of its time. He was known for his clean, family-friendly humor, physical comedy, pantomime, and heartfelt monologues.

Offstage, Skelton was also a talented painter, particularly of clowns, and a prolific writer. Despite personal tragedies—including the death of his young son—Skelton maintained a deep sense of compassion and kindness, often using his platform to spread joy and promote decency.

A devout entertainer to the end, Skelton once said, “If I can make people smile, then I have accomplished something worthwhile.”
