The U.S. Launch of the Sega Saturn

Описание к видео The U.S. Launch of the Sega Saturn

I did a video about a year ago called "Why the Sega Saturn Failed". While I felt I made my case strongly, some came away with the idea that I was saying the Saturn had no good games. This is a companion piece to that video that focuses solely on the launch of the system in the United States, and the months leading up to the release of the Sony Playstation. I hope it explains my previous video a bit better.

Episode Notes:

1. All Saturn games captured on a Framemeister.

2. The Saturn ads you see in this video are from Sega's original announcement that Saturn would be released on September 2nd 1995. They were used at trade shows before the surprise launch on May 11th.

3. Mortal Kombat 3 was a 5th generation Playstation exclusive and was released only a month after the system launched. The Saturn went on to get a few spinoffs, but never received the original.

4. Between the surprise release of the Saturn in the US and launch of the Playstation roughly 4 months later, only 3 games were released for the Saturn. Virtua Racing, Bug!, and Street Fighter The Movie.

5. I often harp on the Sega published games Ghen War and Black Fire as being bad Saturn games. Sega needed all resources in games that made Genesis a hit, not garbage like this. Sega of Japan had new IP's completely covered already.

6. Many claim that Saturn would have been better off had it released in September as originally planned. I don't think so. Even when September came, there was only one game from Sega of America, Ghen War, that was released that entire month. As a matter of fact, the only other game that Sega of America directly released for the rest of 1995, was Black Fire in December. Sega of Japan and its affiliates, were responsible for every good Saturn game released that entire first year.
