On May 8, 2025, USA Basketball held a press conference introducing Sue Bird as the first ever Managing Director of the Women’s National Team.

USA Basketball spoke about why Bird was chosen and Bird spoke about why the position appealed to her and what would be her first priorities.

Given that USA Women’s Olympic Basketball Team had a close call in its championship game against France in the 2024 Olympics and that there are national teams from other countries whose players seem to play together often, I asked Bird if the USA Olympic team’s roster needed to be finalized sooner and to have the team play together earlier before the Olympics.
