A heatwave brought thousands of people to the open beaches across Southern California over the weekend despite stay-at-home orders for people across the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aerial footage captured the scene from Los Angeles, where some said the beaches looked like a holiday weekend, with lifeguards and authorities asking people to remember social distancing to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

In San Diego on Sunday, dozens attended a protest, waving flags and signs urging Governor Newsom to reopen businesses and the beaches.

Authorities were concerned the hot weather would draw many people to the open beaches due to "quarantine fatigue" -- a new term used to describe those tired of being cooped up in their homes -- and without proper social distancing, all of the good could be undone if people stop following the order.

The tentative steps toward restarting life run against the warnings of many public health experts.
