Parasite Eve is a survival horror game that was released for the PlayStation in 1998. The game follows Aya Brea, a rookie New York City police officer, as she becomes embroiled in a series of mysterious events surrounding a woman named Melissa Pearce.

The game begins with Aya attending an opera at Carnegie Hall in New York City. During the performance, the lead actress, Melissa Pearce, suddenly begins to spontaneously combust on stage, killing most of the audience. Aya is one of the few survivors and she sets out to investigate the incident.

As Aya delves deeper into the investigation, she discovers that Melissa Pearce was not an ordinary woman. Melissa had been born with the unique ability to manipulate her own mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles within every cell in the body. Melissa had learned to control her mitochondria to the point where she could effectively manipulate her own DNA, giving her the power to alter her physical form and generate incredible amounts of energy.

Aya also discovers that Melissa had been seeking a host body to fuse with, in order to achieve her ultimate goal of becoming a supreme being. She had chosen Aya as her host and was planning to use her body to achieve her goal.

Aya manages to defeat Melissa, but not before she has fused with the cells of the entire audience at Carnegie Hall, granting her almost god-like powers. Aya is forced to battle Melissa in a series of epic confrontations, ultimately defeating her and saving the city from certain destruction.

Throughout the game, Aya is aided by a scientist named Kunihiko Maeda, who has been studying the unique properties of mitochondria. He provides Aya with information and assistance, and helps her to better understand the mysterious events that are unfolding around her.

The game explores themes of genetic engineering, human evolution, and the potential for science to be both a force for good and evil.
