Discover Good Old Japan in Tochigi #2 | Shiobara Heike Shishimai (Lion Dance)

In Nakashiobara, Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, the traditional Hitoridachi Sanbiki Shishi-mai (Three-Lion Dance) is performed. The lion dance in Nakashiobara features 3 lions; a young male lion "Oh-jishi," a senior male lion "Tai-jishi," and a female lion "Me-jishi." Here, each dancer wears a lion head and dance in solo. Accompanied by the playing of kakkodaiko (drums), fue (flutes) ,and traditional Japanese bamboo instruments named sasara , they perform a dance praying for safety and a bountiful harvest.
In the program "Yumi Kuguri," the highlight is a scene in which the lion dancer pass through a bow, and is said to be a dance praying for victory in battle.
