This O.S.C.A 1600 GT Zagato Competition Berlinetta is available for immediate and direct purchase from our showroom in San Diego, California.

The 1600 GT was the last official Maserati brothers project under their O.S.C.A. company name. A total of 140 of them were built from July of 1961 until early 1963. Of the 140 built, 98 were fitted with ultra-sexy, Zagato "Double Bubble" light-alloy coachwork. They were primarily intended for competition / road use while the remaining example were bodied by Fissore and Touring and primarily intended for road use only.

O.S.C.A. offered these vehicles with three different levels of tuning. In the basic form, the “1600 GT2” version was offered with 105bhp, a 50-liter fuel tank and a top speed of 190kph. A slightly higher tuned “1600GTV” version had a 125bhp engine and retained the 50-liter fuel tank but top speed increased to 205kph. The top rated version as with our subject vehicle here was offered as the “1600GTS” variant. This version produced 140bhp and now came with an 87-liter fuel tank and top speed was listed as 220kph. The “1600GTS” utilized the now famous Zagato “Double Bubble” alloy-coachwork which dropped the vehicle weight from 862 kilograms to 800 even.

This particular example was issued a completion date of March 1st, 1962 and as noted was fitted from new with the 1600GTS / 140bhp specification engine package, but at the moment almost nothing else is know of the vehicle's early life. We suspect given the various washed out scrutineering decals on the front windscreen and the remains of a race inspection tag under the steering column that one of the earlier Italian owners likely raced the car. Another clue to early races and possible rally use is a very clever installation of an adjustable central Marchal spotlight behind the front grill, perspex side windows and a fairly substantial steel roll bar.

This 1600 GT also is fitted with the extremely light, magnesium “Amadori Tipo 40049" rims. All four are a matching set and while quite rare, this Competition Zagato Berlinetta also retains the original bumpers front and rear which almost no surviving examples still have.

I am working with several individuals to see if they might be able to track down the original Italian registration which might lead us to know more about the vehicle’s early history and potential use on the track may have been. In any case, by 1968 the vehicle was imported to the States and found in the Virginia beach area which likely indicates it was brought in by either a Navy or Marine Corp officer.

Shortly thereafter, the vehicle was then purchased by John Khal Sr. and after he passed away it was given to his son, John Jr. The car had remained largely un-driven and stored for most of its life in the States until passing to a well known, California Italian car collector where it has remained undisturbed until removed from storage and sent to us in preparation for a sale on Bring-A-Trailer.

Under current ownership very little was done other than safely storing it away for future use that unfortunately never came to be. Not quite a “Barn Find, more of a "Garage Treasure" would be a better way to describe this one. It remains essentially a two owner vehicle since coming to the States and it has never been seen or shown publicly. It now runs and drives and remains rust and accident free as well as all matching numbers but it will need various attention before any sustained use. The car recently spent more than three weeks with James Millar in San Diego, California having a full fluid and filter services. A complete cleaning of the fuel system and rebuilding of the carburetors and partial rebuilding of the braking system. A full safety check was completed and while the car starts easily it will still need quite a bit of attention to finish brake repairs, sorting and set up work and a general overall inspections and attention to the nearly 50 years of deferred maintenance items.

In addition to being, rust and accident free and all matching numbers, all of the hidden Zagato body number stamps can be found in the various places of the car where they are normally found. This is an extremely rare, and totally unrestored example with the original four-speed gearbox with the car and currently fitted with a close ration, racing five-speed gearbox. Engine compression is perfect on all cylinders and the car has no smoke or noises.

I drove the car around the neighborhood but given that quite a bit of work is still needed and the car is on 40 plus year old tires, I limited myself to just 10 or so kilometers of travel. The next fortunate custodian can have the honors of either restoring completely or simply attending to the mechanical work to make it a fantastically preserved road/racer once again.
