Nicky Eastaugh Textile Artist - An exploration of the relationship between identity and place

Описание к видео Nicky Eastaugh Textile Artist - An exploration of the relationship between identity and place

My name is Nicky Eastaugh and I’m studying for a degree in textiles with The Open College of the Arts which completes next summer.

The aim of this presentation is to give you a flavour of my work and to share my love of colour, geometry and weaving. I hope that it interests and inspires you.

I would love to hear your feedback, and I am particularly interested in any sensations, images, feelings or thoughts that my work might prompt. Please leave feedback in the comments, and if it relates to a particular sample I would be grateful if you could mention it’s number (top left of each section).

The paragraphs below explains a bit more about me and the topics which inspire my creativity:

My interest is in identity and place, and the relationship people have with each other and their environment. It includes issues relating to migration, globalisation, cultural displacement, belonging, and the marginalised and excluded.

I moved to Torrevieja from the UK in 2020 under the Brexit withdrawal agreement, and I am not alone - approximately 50% of the towns registered population are foreigners. As a British national and immigrant I am an outsider, but at the same time I feel part of the local community and a wider family of European nations.

Torrevieja’s multinational character is expressed through the co-existence of over 120 different nationalities, and human action on the environment through traditional industries (like farming, fishing, esparto cultivation and weaving, and salt extraction), and more recently urban development, the tourist industry, and a population in constant flux. My current body of work is a celebration of this, and aims to be joyful and inclusive. The Parque de las Naciones is my preferred exhibition site because it is an accessible public space used by a wide demographic which reflects my desire to promote diversity and community cohesion.
