The rivalry between the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 is as fierce as any other, with both having helped kick off the compact, car-based crossover trend back in the late 1990s. And while the Toyota RAV4 series has grown to become the world's best-selling SUV, Honda has done some exciting things with its CRV. In this video, we compare the 2 models to see which one is better. Stay tuned and watch as we compare l different parameters and see how they perform.
Performance
First, let's compare the performance stats between the Toyota RAV 4 and Honda CRV. The performance stats might be the only area where the Toyota RAV 4 wins over the CRV.
The first thing to get out of the way is that both the base and highest engine horsepower of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 effectively exceeds the performance of the CRV.
Toyota has 3 options to choose from, depending on your preferences and, of course, prices. There's a base level 2.5 liter,4 cylinder engine that can put out 203 horsepower. There's also a hybrid option that hosts 219 horsepower. At the top of the pyramid, however, is the plug-in RAV4 Prime which has a whopping 308 horsepower.
The CRV meanwhile only gives you 2 options which are nothing compared to the RAV4. The base model of the Honda CRV has a turbocharged 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine which lets out just 190 horsepower. The higher-end version of the Honda CRV offers 204 horsepower.
Efficiency
Moving on, the level of power these vehicles put out will not feel as thrilling as it should since the engines have not been designed to efficiently distribute this power. The RAV 4 and the CRV are evenly matched in the efficiency department.
Starting with the base model turbo engine in the CRV, Honda didn't change its fuel economy from the 2022 model. Depending on usage, you'll get between 28 and 34 miles per gallon in this vehicle. However, if you decide to go all-wheel drive mode, the range drops to around 27 to 32 miles a gallon. The hybrid version of the CRV has impressive efficiency numbers. The front-wheel drive 2023 Honda CRV hybrid is rated between 36 and 43 miles a gallon. The efficiency numbers on the all-wheel drive model drop to around 34 to 40.
The RAV 4's base version meanwhile has been rated to get as high as 30 miles a gallon. These numbers are just the average and could get higher depending on driving conditions. The hybrid version of the RAV4 also has an estimated combined mileage of around 40 miles a gallon. These stats are pretty even between the RAV 4 and CRV; however, the RAV 4 has another trick up its sleeve. That's the hybrid RAV4 Prime. This car has 94 miles a gallon when used in electric-only mode. However, it falls significantly when used with the hybrid mode to around 38 to 42 miles a gallon.
Design
Both the RAV and CRV are designed in such a way that they make a bold market statement. The designs are consistent with the current rugged style of recent SUVs. Both cars are striking in appearance; however, if you're looking for an SUV distinct from its predecessor, the Honda CRV will be your preferred choice. The CRV 2023 received a new look with an extended wheelbase and redesigned LED headlights that make the car look more futuristic. The windshield pillars on the CRV have also been repositioned so as to enhance the driver's view of the road. Other changes compared to last year include the large grille on the front, the long hood, and the horizontal belt line that strikes the eyes.
The Toyota RAV4, meanwhile, has stuck to the designs of its predecessor. While there are few changes in the design, the RAV 4 appeals to customers and is selling out fast. However, it would be great if Toyota tried something new to spike interest.
Interior
Moving inside, the Honda 2023 CRV is spacious and has room for cargo, thanks to its bigger size. While both cars can carry 5 passengers, the CRV offers more room space, thus making it more comfortable. The CRV has 41 inches of legroom at the back instead of the RAV4's 37.8 inches. The CRV also has 76.5 cubic feet of cargo space as opposed to 69.8 cubic feet on the RAV 4. While both these comparison stats might seem insignificant, the CRV offers more comfort and convenience.
