Balerion the Black Dread was the most fearsome and legendary dragon in the history of Westeros. A massive, jet-black creature, he was the largest and most powerful dragon ever known, capable of breathing fire so hot it could melt stone. His enormous wingspan would darken the skies as he flew, inspiring terror across the land. Balerion was named "the Black Dread" for his size, strength, and the devastation he could unleash.

Balerion’s most famous rider was Aegon the Conqueror, the Targaryen king who used him to conquer and unite the Seven Kingdoms. During Aegon’s Conquest, Balerion’s flame obliterated entire armies and turned castles to ash, most notably Harrenhal, which was left in ruins after his fiery assault.

After Aegon’s reign, Balerion was also ridden by other members of House Targaryen, including Maegor the Cruel and Princess Aerea. Though many dragons existed in Targaryen history, none ever matched Balerion’s immense size or legendary reputation. His skull, enormous and blackened, remains in the Red Keep as a reminder of the sheer power he once held over Westeros.
