Davis is known as the most bicycle friendly town in the world.
Biking can be fun, but if not done carefully, it can be very dangerous, especially if you don't follow the rules.
Before you get to riding, here's a set of biking tips and guidelines to keep you safe on the road.

How to lock your bike:
Make sure to get a u-lock. This is essential to keeping your bike protected from theft.
Never leave your bike unlocked, even if you're in a rush or just leaving it "for a minute."
Be sure to lock both the bike's wheel and frame to a fixed bike rack.
Always double check to make sure your bike is securely locked.

ON CAMPUS
There are a lot of intersections around the campus called roundabouts. These traffic circles can be tricky!
The two most important rules to remember when approaching a roundabout are:
1. To always ride counterclockwise around the circle
2. To always yield right-of-way, which means you give priority to riders already in the circle.

Use hand signals to signal other drivers when you turn at junctions.
Put your left hand straight out when turning left.
And put your right hand straight out when turning right.

DOWNTOWN
Stay on a bike whenever possible.
Ride in a straight line.
Don't weave between cars.
Make a full stop at the stop signs. This means you put one foot completely on the ground.
Look left and right. Continue biking when the road is clear.

In California, every person riding a bicycle has all of the rights and responsibilities of a car driver so obey all traffic laws.
You may be fined for running a stop sign, speeding, wearing headphones, or riding a bike at night without a bicycle light.

Some last advice-Be aware of your surrounding and don't forget to wear a helmet.
