RICHBOROUGH ROMAN FORT | The GATEWAY to the ROMAN CONQUEST of Britain

Описание к видео RICHBOROUGH ROMAN FORT | The GATEWAY to the ROMAN CONQUEST of Britain

Richborough Roman Fort, located near Sandwich in Kent, England, is one of the most important Roman sites in Britain, marking the point where the Roman invasion of AD 43 began. Known in antiquity as Rutupiae, it served as a gateway for the Roman conquest and a critical link between Britain and the rest of the Roman Empire.

The site initially functioned as a supply base, with the construction of a massive triumphal arch to celebrate the successful invasion. Over the centuries, Richborough evolved into a bustling port town and later a heavily fortified military base.

The fort's defensive walls, built in the late 3rd century, are among the best-preserved Roman structures in Britain, showcasing the military engineering expertise of the time. The site also features the remains of earlier phases, including a Saxon Shore fort and evidence of civilian settlement, such as a bathhouse and granaries.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered coins, pottery, and other artifacts that illustrate the daily life and strategic importance of Richborough during Roman rule.
