In this episode I’ll talk about two very different versions of the same script I wrote in the 1990s: “Head Shots” and “The Burning Angels.”

It’s a psychological thriller about a woman with schizophrenia who witnesses a murder by a cop.

Working with Egg Pictures, Jodie Foster’s production company, I realized that the structure was too complicated and offbeat (4 central characters.) I cut the male lead and turned the villain into a sort of tortured hero. I’ll talk through the project’s history to show how I got there.

I hope that comparing the two scripts can demonstrate how many different ways there are to conceive of a story -- while preserving the feeling, the vision and even the most powerful sequences.
