Led by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, thousands of students marched through Havana on January 27 with lit, homemade torches to honor José Martí, Cuba's national hero. This year, they are protesting US threats against the Caribbean island, situated just 90 miles from the US.

The protest came as Cuba faces severe economic strain and energy shortage due to long-standing US sanctions and halted Venezuelan oil shipments after US capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
