Keith Fitton's SoundShoot for the theme 'Waves'

Keith Writes: "To create the music soundtrack I worked on my Apple Macbook, keyboard and Logic Express. The inspiration was to build a piece that, given the ninety second available sound space, held a coherent narrative whilst possessing a degree of dramatic impact and emotional resonance that reflected the theme. It was a technical challenge because primarily I am a disabled one-armed guitarist with little experience of using the keyboards. I must say though, that I found the experience of working in this way really stimulating, and ultimately liberating. The most difficult musical issue was what to leave out of the piece. It's so easy, when you have an orchestra quite literally at your fingertips, to overegg the biscuit; so I had to be very mindful of the need to keep things relatively simple.

As far as the theme goes, it immediately suggested the waves formed by wind and water, but I was also thinking about those made by man -- specifically radio waves. It struck me, that the better we get at developing the technology to communicate better, in some ways the more alienated from each other, and the natural world we become. If I could find a way of mixing these elements within a narrative then the music and film might make sense together as one, rather than co-exist as separate entities.

Lizzi, my lovely wife is an actress, and her help in planning and executing the filming was crucial. We shot the video on a very basic Panasonic compact digital camera, and edited it with iMovie on the Mac. The weather in West Cumbria was suitably wild on the two days we filmed, and the sequence on Allonby beach was done in the tooth of a chilling westerly that cut to the bone. We were pleased to return home with our two sandy dogs and a mug of hot tea.

All in all, working on this short piece was a challenge and a joy. My thanks go to SoundShoots for the opportunity."
