An octopus latched onto me in the shallows during a New Zealand coastal catch-and-cook — and the whole mission changed instantly.

This video starts as a classic day on the boat: coastal foraging, working the tide, hunting for seafood, and building a proper beach feast from what we harvest. Then we hit a moment you can’t plan for — a hidden octopus in the rocks grabs on, and it turns into a close-quarters scramble in ankle-deep water.

We still cook up a massive feed on the beach from the other seafood we gathered, but the octopus is treated differently. We take it home and cook it properly later — not for drama, but out of respect for the animal and the process.
