Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was convicted on January 18, 2025, for the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in August last year. Charged under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the verdict followed months of delays and challenges. In November 2024, Roy was formally charged, but the case faltered in December as the CBI failed to file chargesheets on time, leading to bail for two suspects. The victim's family, alleging a lackluster investigation, moved the Calcutta High Court. Protests by doctors underscored the gravity of the case, with the CBI now demanding the maximum punishment. The court will announce Roy's sentence on January 20.
