Abigail’s spina bifida was diagnosed before birth, and thanks to CHLA’s Fetal-Maternal Center, her mother, Gilda, became the first person in the western U.S. to undergo in-utero fetoscopic spina bifida repair surgery.

Children with spina bifida often face mobility challenges, but this minimally invasive prenatal surgery can double their chances of walking independently. Today, at age 6, Abigail not only walks, she zips around on her scooter!
