Today we’re ringing in the Chime, by Pettyjohn Electronics. The Chime is an extended take on one half of Pettyjohn’s outstanding Pettydrive pedal. Of the two sides, the Chime is the one primarily focused on pre-amplification, but the Gain control has been dramatically extended by 2.5 times, and simulates pushing a set of power amp tubes. Adding to this gain range is the new Boost control, which controls the amount of saturation in the signal path. Both controls are highly interactive with the clipping switch, and careful tweaking of each yields sounds from a glassy top-end sparkle to a raspy near-fuzz tone with plenty of harmonics. As with all Pettyjohn pedals, the clipping selection is far from an afterthought and the Chime is no different, offering a carefully selected set of germanium and yellow LED clipping, as well as a combination of both. The high-headroom yellow LEDs only clip past a certain point for some precision tone tailoring. The Chime features a powerful EQ section, with a Low-Cut control that sits pre-gain, as well as a post-gain tilt-style EQ for boosting and cutting selective frequencies after running your signal through the wringer. And like all Pettyjohn’s devices, the Chime is hand-made with primo parts in Oregon, USA.
