Mr. Appave expresses his optimism for the changes to the IMO STCW 1978 convention that were given effect by the Manila Amendments.

Historically, the ILO set the training standards of seafarers and this task was taken over by the IMO.

He explains that the ILO and the IMO work closely together as it follows that training of seafarers and their working conditions go hand in hand in with each other.

Dani considers that the updating of seafarers working conditions embodied in the single ILO instrument known as the Maritime Labour Convention or MLC 2006 when taken together with the revised STCW Convention will do much to enhance career opportunities for seafarers.
