Jamie Tarses, who in 1996 became the first woman to serve as entertainment president of a broadcast network, died on Monday. She was 56. The cause of death was heart complications from a cardiac event last fall, according to a family statement. Tarses was also the youngest person ever to serve as an entertainment president when ABC recruited her from NBC at the age of 32. During her brief but tumultuous tenure — due in no small part to an enormous amount of press scrutiny — Tarses launched Dharma & Greg, The Practice, Frasier, and Sports Night. She also oversaw the launch of the memorable "TV Is Good" marketing campaign from TBWA\Chiat\Day. Born in Pittsburgh and raised in Los Angeles, Tarses was the daughter of TV writer Jay Tarses (The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd). The Williams College graduate cut her teeth at Saturday Night Live before working in casting for Lorimar Productions. She rejoined NBC in 1987 under then-president Brandon Tartikoff, where she helped to develop Friends, Mad About You, and Wings, among others. ABC's decision to hire the young Turk was met with enormous scrutiny, which included a scathing and sexist article by Lynn Hirschberg for the New York Times Magazine. The long profile began with a commentary about the car she drove — a Range Rover — and a reference to her hair, which Hirschberg described as "a mass of curls that falls past her shoulders, is piled up on her head like a corona. A tendril has come loose and Tarses is fussing with it, tugging at the stray hair, distracted by it and by other things." The not-so-subtle digs at her youth and femininity stood out more than any mention of her talents. After ABC, Tarses went on to find great success as a producer, developing My Boys, Happy Endings, and Franklin & Bash for the Turner cable networks. Her most recent triumphs were The Wilds on Amazon Prime and the upcoming The Mysterious Benedict Society on Disney+."Jamie could have gone back to run a studio or network or name the streaming platform, but she preferred the creative process," says Kevin Falls, who executive produced Franklin & Bash with Tarses. "She loved working with writers, being on set, in post. That's where she was happiest. It was literally in her DNA given her pedigree. She was a great producing partner, but it's her friendship that I'll miss forever."Tarses is survived by her partner, Paddy Aubrey, and their children, Wyatt and Sloane. "For all her talent and success in entertainment, the thing Jamie was proudest of and most consumed by were her two kids," said her brother Matt Tarses in a statement. "She was never happier than when she was with Wyatt and Sloane."Related content:
