💊 Getting Prescriptions as an Expat/ Digital Nomad

✅ Plan ahead for any regular prescriptions that you take.

You may be able to buy them in the country or countries that you are visiting but they may cost MORE than what you would pay in the US if you have health insurance. Or you may not be able to get them at all.

Some prescriptions you may be able to find, but under a completely different name.

For instance, I take Wellbutrin, which goes by at least 6 different names in the US. In Mexico, it goes by Bupropion or the brand name Bipitrek. It was hit or miss to find it in Playa del Carmen but pretty easy to get in Merida, Yucatan. It was about $50 US to get a month's supply, way more expensive than my copay in the US.

I also take Buspar as an anti-anxiety drug. Mexico does not produce or sell this drug at all.

Tips for International Travel if you need prescription medication:

1. Figure out what prescriptions you will need and how much to cover your trip. Get them in the US to save yourself some hassle, especially if you have a low co-pay for them.

2. OR research online by typing in "What is {name of prescription) called in Japan?" You may need to search the generic name to find it. And ask, "Is __________ available in Japan?"
