Entitlement is an odd topic to me.

It's something we really fear creating in our children, but I don't think its cause is as tangible as we think.

I feel like Dr. Becky is really onto something when she suggests that entitlement is the fear of frustration. It adds potential context to this challenging topic.

As parents, we want the best for our kids. But there's a difference between giving them all the things they need and avoiding any upsetting or concerning situations.

This example is great because it perfectly illustrates a moment for a wealthy family that could have built up resilience in this boy. The problem is that one of his first exposures to frustration (that kids can handle) didn't happen until he was 16.

If that family has worked hard for their money and wants to fly first class, great. But this is a great example of why it's so important to expose our children to challenging experiences and engage in moments and situations that may not be exactly what they'd hoped for.

Maybe that's taking the subway, or folding laundry, or not going out to lunch when they asked for it. These "disappointments" are actually essential to healthy mental development.
