A Conversation with Russia Expert Andrew Monaghan

Is Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine an anomaly, or an example of Russian grand strategy in action? If the latter, what does this mean for potential future clashes with Russia around the world? Andrew Monaghan has studied Russia for decades and recently edited a book, “Russia Grand Strategy in the Era of Global Power Competition,” that explains the Russian perspective on foreign policy and outlines Russia’s long-term goals and strategies.

On April 11, USIP hosted a conversation with Andrew Monaghan on what Russian grand strategy entails, how it manifests in the political, economic, and military spheres, and what this means for the United States and the future of global conflict in the era of great power competition.

The United States Institute of Peace is a national, nonpartisan, independent institute, founded by Congress and dedicated to the proposition that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical and essential for U.S. and global security. In conflict zones abroad, the Institute works with local partners to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflict. To reduce future crises and the need for costly interventions, USIP works with governments and civil societies to build local capacities to manage conflict peacefully. The Institute pursues its mission by linking research, policy, training, analysis and direct action to support those who are working to build a more peaceful, inclusive world.
