Rhode Island is home to a number of retail firsts, not the least of which are the first self-serve department store (Ann & Hope), and the first indoor shopping mall (The Arcade). But two of the first and oldest/longest continually operating general stores in America are right here in Rhode Island! One of them is no longer around, but the other is still open more than two hundred years later, so you can still check them out for yourself!
