Legal: I use onX maps and paper maps to verify I am camping on legal land. Most importantly, I stay off any private land without permission.

Level: Get out of your van or truck and get some boots on the ground. Make sure there are no rocks or debris that could make the night uncomfortable. If you absolutely have to sleep on a slope, sleep with your head higher than your feet.

Look Up: Make sure there are no chances for falling branches in high wind, rock fall or avalanche danger.
