Toppin & Fede Injury Update
Texas Tech Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Grant McCasland, met with the local media ahead of the Red Raiders tipping off their Big 12 slate for the 2024-25 season
The main topic was of course the health of the two members of the front court Federiko Federiko and JT Toppin
When asked about who he expects to be available against UCF, McCasland said, "Our anticipation is that everybody is going to be able to play outside of Jazz Henderson," McCasland said. "We've had everybody in practice and at this point, we would anticipate getting everybody back."
That’s big-time and must-hear news for Texas Tech fans as the Red Raiders struggled offensively against good competition (Texas A&M) without Toppin

RC’s Take: JT Toppin is a Top 5 player in the Big 12 and the most important player on this Texas Tech roster. The Red Raiders and Grant McCasland were smart to rest him and get him back to as close to 100% as possible for the meaningful part of their schedule

What To Expect From Texas Tech MBB In The Big 12
Texas Tech was picked to finish 7th in the Big 12 in preseason poll
The Red Raiders are ranked 19th in the NET and 15th on KenPom headed into Big 12 play
Entering B12 with 0 Quad 1+2 wins and a St Joe's loss 5 spots away from becoming Quad 3
Would love to see Hawkins be more aggressive as a scorer when he gets to his spots off the dribble
I would start Kevin Overton over Kerwin Walton
Perimeter defense is a bit of a concern, but they have length to be good
Hard to truly judge Tech since they didn’t have Toppin for almost half their non-con games including against Texas A&M (lost by 5)

RC’s Take: I think this team is excellent and has a chance to surprise some people. Obviously, keeping JT and Fede healthy (alongside D5 and Chance) is key, but they shoot the ball well and space well. However, the defense could be their undoing (especially the 3-point line). Overall, I have the Red Raiders finishing conference play with 12 or 13 wins (KenPom has Tech with 13 conference wins) and securing a Top5-6 finish in the Big 12. That’ll likely translate to a 5 or 6 seed in the NCAA tournament
