This was one of my white whales, so I am happy to have got the 1cc. Metal Slug perfectly encapsulates what I love about arcade games - the first time you play it, it seems too hard. But with continued play & practice, you are able to dominate the game. This run is by no means perfect with mistakes throughout, but it is my first Metal Slug 1cc and want to record it. There are few hairy moments, but it was a lot of fun.

Some important techniques to learn:
machine gun is the only (non-slug) weapon that can fire diagonally. Use this to your advantage and clear out enemies before they become a problem. Learn to spread your fire.
Similarly, the Slug can fire diagonally. Learn to that while continually moving forward.
You have a lot of invincibility when jumping out of the Slug. Use this your advantage when your Slug is about to get hit by something. You can see a simple example on the first level helicopter where I jump out of the Slug just before the helicopter's bombs hit. Practice it here, as it will be very useful later on.
Collecting and using grenades with the Slug (as opposed to missiles) is more powerful due to the speed at which you can throw them out. You can do this by holding down while in the Slug and pressing the grenade button. You can even move left and right with diagonal down left/right a little while doing this. It's very strong vs bosses and is the main strat to use.
Learn the enemy placement and how to deal with them. There are two main strats in Metal Slug, 1)slow & steady; 2) run for your life blasting everything. Know when to use which.
Learn the bosses. They all have set patterns. Learn, practice, die, repeat (with less dying hopefully).

Once you get good enough, you will notice there are three places which are most dangerous. The third level mid-boss Allen O'Neil; the bridge on the final stage; and the final boss. This is where I had my biggest difficulties, and I would argue the bridge is the hardest part.

Allen O'Neil has a few different strats you can use. The coolest and fastest of which is a knife fight. Stab him and time your jump to miss his knife.You can also stay under him and shoot, or stay above and shoot. None are fool proof, but practice each and see which you prefer.
